A Founders vision. Bringing Oxford to Life

I am Sophie, an accredited Oxford guide and founder of Oxford History Tours.

Our approach is to create walking tours rooted in research, storytelling and a love of the quiet details that make Oxford the unique place is today. OHT guides are chosen for their professionalism and specialised expertise in historical and cultural topics. Several of our tours are available in multiple languages and almost all of them in French and English.

While it would be churlish to deny the fascination of Potter, Morse, and other cinematic stories which have become a part of Oxford’s story, the goal of our tours is to reveal real and extraordinary events, personalities, buildings and arts of Oxford.

Our goal is to reveal the richly layered history of Oxford and offer experiences which:

  • are personalised and adaptable

  • cover Oxford history, university life and traditions today

  • are paced to ensure a relaxed, entertaining experience

  • are suitable for all ages, institutions, and abilities, and can accommodate individuals or groups of up to 25

Background

Not long after graduating as a BA hons from Oxford Brookes I spent many years in France renovating a rare almost long neglected fortified castle.

In France I launched a tour company specialising in the region’s medieval history where I matched local authors with visitors to the region.

Returning to Oxford it is a great pleasure to deepen and share my appreciation of, medieval, scholarly, poetic, radical and sometimes playful stories of Oxford. Unlike the French Languedoc, which involved using transport, Oxford’s treasures and concentrated and an extraordinary range of breathtaking and insightful stories are within a stone's throw of each other from the city centre.

In Beyond Paris, and Outsider’s Guide to Rural France, my debut publication, I explore the lesser-known charms of the French countryside - both as entertainment and as a practical guide for English-speaking readers considering a move to France.

Oxford History Tours does not merely explain — it reveals. Expect glimpses of easily missed details, echoes of the footsteps of heroes and scoundrels, and the quiet beauty of a college quadrangle in the golden hour. Each tour is crafted with care, making the very best of the opportunities available on the day — from the most flattering light for architecture, to moments when college gates open, to times when particular spaces are at their quietest or most atmospheric. Every tour is conscientiously personalised, ensuring individuals and groups experience Oxford at its most revealing and memorable.

A number of Oxford History Tour guides are accredited to guide in foreign languages including French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.

  • " Sophie did a great tour with us. Having studied in Oxford herself and living there for a long time, she really knows the place and show the visitor around, knows which Colleges are open to the public (and which not), can sometimes also make things possible in visitor request, and during the tour provides a complete overview of the city, the university, JRR Tolkien and Christopher Wren, Harry Potter and Charles I, the traditional colleges and also the new Science faculties. We saw everything we wanted and much more. We had a great afternoon with Sophie, and she gave us also lots of helpful recommendations for the time thereafter.."

    Michael, USA

  • "Sophie is so knowledgeable! Oxford is a city of history, and she knows it so well. Her recommendation for our dinner after the tour was perfect! She also took care of me beforehand in suggesting other things to do before her tour. She’s the best. A pro’s pro!"

    Kori, USA

  • "My history tour with Sophie was informative and entertaining. The horror was made funny and the ridiculous serious. I was surprised by how much I didn't know and went away with new insights into, not only the university's history and traditions, but the history of England generally. I also got some good ideas for the rest of my stay in Oxford. Thank you!"

    James, UK

  • "This tour was a lovely introduction to Oxford University. As a recent transplant from the US, it was a great way to get my bearings of the area, visit a college, and learn about some fascinating local history. Whether we were gazing at gargoyles or admiring beautiful stained glass, Sophie was a true delight – very knowledgeable, thoughtful, and well-articulated. I highly recommend this experience!"

    Megan, USA

  • "Fascinating, thoughtfully constructed tour of Oxford University encompassing a thousand years of history. I've lived in Oxford for thirty years, yet in this tour learned new and intriguing nuggets about the city, discovered hidden gems in ancient stone buildings that I've been strolling past all these years."

    Maria, Oxford, UK

  • "Sophie is a superb, experienced and enriching guide. We are a retired US professional couple. We've hired individual local guides throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and Sophie tops our list! She spent hours with us in advance, curating our day in Oxford, then filled our tour with history, architecture, art, education, culture…and fun. The day was perfectly paced and suited to our needs. It was a graduation day, so like the happy students, we too tossed our hats in celebration. Brava Sophie!"
