The Covered market

A British equivalent of Les Halles, today the 18th century Covered Market, a warren of arcades between High Street and Market Street is a gathering of artisans, boutiques and inexpensive eateries. It also has a fantastic butters, cheese shop and florist.

From Wednesday to Saturday Gloucester Green offers an eclectic English market mix of fine crafts, jewellery, vintage & bric a brac. Also a range of street food from across th world. It varies slightly on different days of the week. It has a friendly atmosphere with local traders, craftspeople and entrepreneurs.

Shopping in Oxford: A Personal guide

Whether you're looking for flowers, fine chocolates, a scoop of good ice cream, vintage jewellery, a splendid hat, gentlemen’s tailoring, designer brands or high street fashion, Oxford is a fabulous place to shop. The city centre is compact, walkable, and full of surprises, with everything from historic arcades to independent boutiques.

Here are a few favourite spots I think a visitor with a penchant to shopping would enjoy.

If you are looking for items such as Oxford sweat shirts, posters key rings etc. you cannot do better than the 4 or 5 on either side of Broad Canvas the artist material shop on Broad Street. There are more on Cornmarket.

The Covered Market
Tucked just off the High Street, this historic arcade is a treasure trove. You’ll find artisan florists, old-school butchers, local crafts, classy chocolates, and a scattering of quirky souvenirs. It’s perfect for browsing or picking up something unexpected.

Westgate & High Street Souvenir Shops
The Westgate Centre houses a full range of well-known high street brands and several designer stores. Ideal for something quick and cheerful to take home. John Lewis also offers a reputable mix of fashion, beauty, and homeware.

Bodleian Library & Museum Shops
The Bodleian has one of the most elegant gift shops in town. Stationery, literary gifts, and Oxford-themed keepsakes that feel a little more refined. Museum shops (like those at the Ashmolean and the Pitt Rivers) offer original gifts and excellent value, often inspired by their exhibitions and collections.

Hidden Boutiques & Vintage Finds
Don’t miss the independent shops tucked down Ship Street, Little Clarendon Street, or the charming lanes around Turl Street and the Cowley Road. From sustainable fashion and vintage jewellery to handmade accessories and upcycled pieces, and specialist off-licences. Oxford rewards those who browse slowly. I Love Object of Use on turn Street which has an eccentric collection of exquisite useful things.

Fashion & Menswear
For gentlemen’s clothing, Oxford has both traditional outfitters and modern menswear labels. There’s a growing selection of designer and sustainable fashion for all tastes, whether you're after statement pieces or classic style.

Oxford’s best shopping is best done on foot. If you are going to park here is some advice. Give yourself time to wander. You’ll may find exactly the thing you didn’t know you were looking for.
