Exeter College
“Floreat Exon”
Exeter is Oxford’s fourth oldest college, founded in 1314. Floreat Exon means let Exeter flourish and captures the spirit of a college founded for the sons of West Country gentry, including many from Cornwall.
Exeter alumni have left a strong mark on English literature and art. Willian Morris, Edward Burne Jones, JRR Tolkien, Alan Bennett, Martin Amis, Will Self and Philip Pullman all studied here. Pullman based his fictional ‘Jordan College’ on Exeter, and J.K. Rowling, while never a student at the college, was made an honorary fellow for her contribution to children’s literacy.
The college chapel, inspired by Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, is a soaring example of the 19th-century Oxford Movement: a revival of religious architecture, art, and ritual.
And for fans of Inspector Morse, Exeter's calm front lawn was the scene of a dramatic fall of fictional Detective Inspector Morse.
