Founded in 1555 by Sir Thomas Pope on the site of the former Durham College, Trinity College has deep historical links with Durham and the north of England. It still occupies buildings of that, before the English Reformation housed monks from Durham Cathedral..
Trinity is associated with learning, tradition and a quietly distinguished academic reputation.
Its alumni include John Henry Newman, who went on to become a theologian, a leader of the Oxford Movement, was an undergraduate at Trinity from 1816 to 1822 and was elected an Honorary Fellow in 1877.
Architecturally, Trinity is impressive. It’s chapel, for example, is one of the most beautiful sacred spaces in Oxford. Designed by Henry Aldrich (1648-1710) and later refined by Christopher Wren (1632–1723), with woodcarving by Grinling Gibbons Designed and 19th century stained glass it tells fascinating political and artistic tales.
